No. 1 Croger

Supermarkets have finally jumped into the internet age. Bricks-and-mortar-based operators like Kroger have taken the lead, though online services such as FreshDirect and Peapod are also in the fray, as are delivery services such as Postmates, Instacart and Shipt.

Publix has had a mixed history with delivery and click-and-collect options, testing various alternatives but not rolling out a chain-wide program. The Florida-based grocery chain is reportedly developing a store designed specifically with delivery and pickup options in mind. Located in the greater Orlando area, the store would be about 30,000 square feet and feature both standard Publix fare and natural and organic options from its GreenWise format. “In early conversations with them, it was a mix [between Publix and Greenwise]  and something built around delivery because of the way the market is changing,” says Tom Krueger, economic development manager for the city of Longwood, Fla.

Florida has become something of a battleground for grocery delivery, with expanded services by Amazon, Walmart and Target, among others. Publix is the dominant grocer in the region, with a 42 percent market share. Target, which acquired delivery service Shipt last December for $550 million, has introduced one-day delivery in the Orlando area. More recently, Shipt began same-day deliveries for Winn-Dixie supermarkets in 13 local markets throughout Florida.
