개인 및 단체가 활동하며, 남기는 수많은 기록물 중 가치가 있는 것을 선별하여 보관하는 장소, 또는 그 기록물 자체를 이르는 용어.
뭔가 복잡해 보이지만, 각종 관공서, 회사, 병원 등의 기록물 보관실을 생각하면 이해하기 쉽다. 예를 들어 병원을 가면, 과거 진료차트를 수배하여 찾아 보게 되는데, 이 진료차트가 보관되어 있는 기록보관실이 아카이브인 것이다.
오늘날엔 대부분의 기록물이 전산화되어 보존되어 있는데, 따라서 대부분의 기록 보관실이 전산열람실과 같은 형태로 되어있다.
물론 일부 전산화가 되지 않은 관공서, 학교, 병원 등에선 아직도 기록물 보관 담당자(archivest)를 두고 있다. 흔히 사서(librarian)하고 많이 혼동하는데, 엄연히 다른 직업이다. 영구기록물 관리기관인 국가기록원에 이러한 담당자가 배치되어 있다.
언뜻 도서관과 비슷해 보이지만, 출판된 도서물을 분류, 보관, 대여하는 도서관과는 달리 이곳의 기록물들은 보통은 복사되거나 출판되지 않으며, 일종의 고유성을 지닌다. 또한 도서관의 장서는 희귀 장서 등이 아닌 이상은 분실 시 대체가 가능하지만, 이곳의 기록물은 대체가 불가능 하다. 도서관 처럼 책장 같은 곳에 서류가 꽂혀 있는 경우도 있지만, 대다수의 기록물 보관실은 서랍 형태의 수납구조를 선호하는 편이다. 경찰청의 증거물 보관실 등을 생각하면 이해가 빠르다.
