2013년 11월 온라인 자동차 소매 업체 인 Carvana는 애틀랜타에 위치한 미국 최초의 자동차 자동 판매기를 열었다.

 

미국의 온라인 중고차 매매회사인 카바나가 테네시주 내슈빌에 세운 5층짜리 건물이 바로 자동차 자판기(출고장)으로 카바나 고객들은 온라인으로 차량을 구매한 후, 배송료를 내고 배송을 받을 수도 있고, 카바나가 운영하는 자동차 자판기에 가서 차량을 직접 찾아갈 수도 있다.

 

카바나 자판기는 음료수 자판기와 같은 방식이지만 크기가 크고 음료수 대신 자동차가 나온다는 매력이 있다.

 

세계 최초로 완전 자동화되어 동전으로 작동하는 자동차 자동 판매기가 공식적으로 운영되기 시작하였고 인터넷을 통해 원하는 차를 선택하고 안내 컴퓨터에서 본인 확인 후 자신의 이름이 새겨진 동전을 받아 자판기 투입구에 넣으면 기계가 작동하기 시작하면서 로봇 팔이 움직여 차를 찾아준다.

 

이렇게 자동차 자판기를 만든 이유는 고객이 직접 차를 가져갈 경우에는 회사의 비용을 절약할 수 있고, 절약된 비용을 투자하여 고객에게 특별한 경험으로 돌려줄 수 있다고 생각했기 때문이다.

 

카바나는 온라인 플랫폼을 통한 중고차 거래 사업을 운영하고 있다.

 

 

Carvana, a technology business start-up based in Phoenix, Arizona, is an online-only used car dealer that allows customers to shop, finance, and trade in cars through their website. It was founded in 2012 as a subsidiary of DriveTime and was spun out in 2014 it held an IPO in 2017 and Ernest Garcia II, the chairman of DriveTime, was the largest shareholder at the time.

 

Carvana offers both nationwide delivery, or the option for customers to pick up their vehicle purchases at one of the company's car vending machine locations after completing the purchase online.

Everything is bigger in Texas — even the vending machines.

Houston is now home to the nation’s largest fully automated coin-operated car vending machine. Operated by Carvana, it stands eight stories tall, stores up to 30 cars and contains four delivery bays.

 

Carvana markets itself as “a better way to buy a car.” Customers visiting Carvana.com can search for and buy their desired car online. They have the option to trade in a car or to set up vehicle financing through Carvana. once they click the buy button, the choice is theirs: have the car delivered to their door or pick it up at the car vending machine.

 

Just to make the experience more authentic, customers who choose to pick up at the vending machine receive an oversized Carvana coin to drop into the custom coin slot, initiating the vending process. They then stand back and wait for their car to be retrieved from the tower and move through the vending machine until it reaches a delivery bay where the customer takes possession.

 

The Houston location is Carvana’s second car vending machine; the first, located in Nashville, is five stories tall and holds up to 20 cars.

 

In the quest to deliver memorable customer experiences, this one raises the bar.
